Fan Favorites: Designs related to our favorite films, shows and themes

Lego

This collection was built up in large part thanks to my desire to have a Lego gallery in my new house. Since this is a gallery for us adults, not a kid's playroom, I was really inspired by the idea of keeping just one bright accent color - yellow - against grays and blacks. As I was designing the mural I'd paint on the gallery wall, I realized the design would make for an excellent fabric. And indeed, I turned that design into yellow Lego curtains to complement my mural.

Mary Poppins

Star Wars

Inspired by the Star Wars language Aurebesh and the pattern of lights (or vents?) seen on the Imperial ships, I designed this fabric and others for a whimsical nod to Empire lovers.

My Obscure Writing collection features these Aurebesh designs, as well as designs featuring the Tivan language from Guardians of the Galaxy, Egyptian hieroglyphs and the Runic writing of the Vikings.

By the way, in the spirit of Hidden Mickeys and Disney's love of incorporating Easter Eggs the fourth design pictured here, space message 009, actually has an interesting message encrypted in Aurebesh. You'll have to translate it to see what it says!

Guardians of the Galaxy

Speaking of Guardians of the Galaxy, one of my favorite rides at Disneyland is the former Tower of Terror, now re-themed (and improved, in my humble opinion) as Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! As such, I've been inspired to design fabrics commemorating the unique exterior look of the colossal ride, which also complement the Tivan-inspired designs.

Blue-print version: https://www.spoonflower.com/en/fabric/13595520

Ghost Mickey version: https://www.spoonflower.com/en/fabric/13615947

I think these would make a fun cinch bag / backpack for going to Disneyland, and can't wait to get my fabrics to start crafting!

Get the complementary Tivan writing designs in my Obscure Writing collection.

Big Bang Theory

One of my favorite shows of all time, the lovable nerdiness of Sheldon, Leonard, Howard and Raj can hardly be captured in still designs. But having a few fan knowing nods is simple enough!

Jolly Holiday Stripes

I designed this fabric initially for a very personal request – my boyfriend wanted to emulate Dick Van Dyke’s character Bert in the original Mary Poppins film. I reviewed film footage and graphics to do my absolute best at matching the colors and stripe widths of Bert’s coat. We ordered 4 yards of this design on now-retired Linen Cotton Canvas, and his Mom sewed the coat. I got to accompany him when he wore it to Dapper Day at Disneyland!

Not only did he get a ton of compliments from passersby – my favorite being, “Man, you WON Dapper Day!” – the face actors for the Jolly Holiday Mary Poppins and Bert were out and about, and they invited him for a stroll around the Central Plaza. It was a fantastic memory, especially being able to capture his favorite ride in the background of the three fast friends. Except that I couldn’t help but notice that the colors in the Bert coat on the Cast Member was – off. For a most genuine-looking coat, this is your fabric! It has been used for many Berts, young and old, and even a few Bert skirts! Take a look at the gallery here!

Buy the fabric here: https://www.spoonflower.com/en/fabric/4238281

Dapper Day, Sept 2015

Other Bert Coats made by my customers

Recommendation: For suit coats, order in Lightweight Cotton Twill or Linen Cotton Canvas. 4 yards is more than enough for an adult coat, you may be able to get away with 3 yards if you use it carefully, but it is also good to have extra to wrap around the hat.

Bert Skirts!
